Today we worked together to solve a maths problem.
We decided that there were quite a few different ways we could solve this problem.
Children's first thoughts on how we could solve our problem. |
Some counted the shoes. |
Some drew the shoes and counted them. |
We had such a great discussion about the different ways. One thing that tricked us was that today there were only 16 children at school and we forgot to include the shoes of the children who were away.
It was great to see the busy brains giving it a go.
We also looked at how many shoes their would be if there were 20 children in Room 13.
Alex said it would be 20 + 20. Great thinking. Tricky to work out.
We then talked about using what we know
e.g. we know that 2+2=4
so that means 20 + 20 = 40
A big thing we discovered today is that we need to use what we know and look for patterns in the maths.
This was a great introduction to counting in 2's and how it can help us solve problems.
We will do lots of counting in 2's now.
I wonder how high we can go??
