Measurement
This term we have been learning the vocabulary and methods of measuring.
We started our unit by reading Jack and the Beanstalk (linked also to our Better Start focus for that week). We measured the Beanstalk and other things in the classroom using the Giant's Feet.
We discovered that feet is a non-standard measurement. We also tried other non-standard units of measurement.

Who is tallest?

How fast are we?

How many handspans long is the table?

How many handspans high is the table?

Measurement

On Friday Room 13 completed the Paper Chain Challenge.

There was a lot of collaborative work needed with their buddy.

Which way do we cut?

How thick do our strips need to be?

How big will the links need to be?

Who will cut and who will staple?

Will ours be the longest?

We know that when comparing lengths we have to start in the same place.
We all started our chains on the yellow line.

So many different lengths of chain from the same sized piece of paper.
We learned so many things in our maths today.
Great team work everyone!

Maths activities
Today we were introduced to some new station activities that we will be doing during maths time.

Say it - make it - write it

Beads in 2s to practice counting in 2s

Peg boards - use rubber bands to make shapes

solve the addition or subtraction problem

skip counting plate lacing.

Maths
Today we worked together to solve a maths problem.

We decided that there were quite a few different ways we could solve this problem.

Children's first thoughts on how we could solve our problem.

Some counted the shoes.

Some drew the shoes and counted them.

We had such a great discussion about the different ways. One thing that tricked us was that today there were only 16 children at school and we forgot to include the shoes of the children who were away.
It was great to see the busy brains giving it a go.

We also looked at how many shoes their would be if there were 20 children in Room 13.
Alex said it would be 20 + 20. Great thinking. Tricky to work out.
We then talked about using what we know
e.g. we know that 2+2=4
so that means 20 + 20 = 40

A big thing we discovered today is that we need to use what we know and look for patterns in the maths.
This was a great introduction to counting in 2's and how it can help us solve problems.
We will do lots of counting in 2's now.
I wonder how high we can go??
